SPD makes his welcome return to the label after a blistering start to the year with his highly-regarded sophomore release ‘The Way We Live’. Here he builds on the raw, emotive power of that release by extrapolating the melodic essence of his previous work and pouring it into a harder, more focused style and sound.
‘Hazy’ is built around an undulating column of percussion, bubbling over a laconic dubstep rhythm. Vocals extolling the virtues of a certain herb only serve to strenghten the heavyweight flex of this beat.
‘Slew’ rolls in on eerie chords and bass stabs, before a narcotic house beat drops in to expand the sinister edge to this track. Clipped FX adds to the ominous atmospherics, leading you on a downward spiral into darkness.
‘Aight’ lightens the mood with a retro house cut that feels like a long-lost warehouse classic, soulful vocals and scattershot percussion drenched over a raw four to the floor.
‘4Tres’ brings proceedings to a close with a widescreen feel – cinematic chords and rolling beats strapped to a chimeric bassline that builds up to a melodic crescendo.
