Interview: All About She

Who are All About She and how did you come together as a trio?

We are James, Jon and Vanya, a production and songwriting trio from London. Myself and James were working together as a duo. We started writing music which seemed to be consistently about girls, which is where the name ‘All About She’ originates from. We had a few sessions with Vanya writing for her solo project. We all got on really well and realised she was the missing peice to All About She. The rest is history!

How did you each start out in the music scene?

Jon- I started dj-ing when I was about 14.

James-I started rapping and song writing when I was 15

Vanya- When I was 13 I started singing with my cousins and sister in a talent show at The Hackney Empire, (we won twice!) and that led to open mic shows. I met these guys, and here I am.

Tell us about your music sounds.

We’re inspired by the music we grew up listening to, such as UKG, Hip Hop, rnb etc. It’s very important for us to maintain a soulful sound with substance.

Some of you originated from a Grime background and are working with uk garage, how do you feel the underground music scene has changed since the early 00’s ?

With the help of social networks, and sites such as soundcloud music is reaching a larger audience far more easily. Social media has allowed the Grime scene to become more accessible and become increasingly less underground. This has resulted in producers such as Preditah being able to maintain their sound and not having to compromise it!

Who are your influences in music?

We are all influenced by the likes of Lauren Hill and The Fugees. Individually we are influenced by artists ranging from Sade to Kendrick Lamar.

What are your favourite tracks?

Recently we’re really loving:
Route 94- My Love
Kove-Love for you
Blonde-It’s You
Gorgon City-Ready For Your Love

What does music mean to you?

Music has become a way of life for us and an obsession. It’s all we do and we can’t see ourselves doing anything else.

Where does your inspiration come from when creating music?

Inspiration comes from everywhere. It might be music that we heard or liked at the weekend, or an old album that we have just come across. Even our moods from day to day can be hugely inspirational.

Tell us about “Higher” and the process and initial ideas for this track

We had the instrumental to the track around a year ago now. We didn’t realise the potential of the track until Vanya laid her vocals on to the beat! At that point we spent time finishing the production. It was important for us to make the track sound fresh but at the same time keep the oldschool feel to it.

What tips & advice do you have for people in the music scene?

We would all advise that you need perseverance whilst perfecting your craft. You have to be willing to fight for what you want and at the same time you have to love the fight.

What have you got planned for the future?

We’ll be releasing music into the new year and beyond, whilst continuing to write and produce for other artists. We also have remixes in the pipeline that we are very excited about! We’ll also be perfecting our live performance and continuing to DJ.

Any last words?

We want to say a huge thank you to all the people out their showing ‘Higher’ so much support. We really appreciate all the love the track is getting.
